The New York City Marathon has been canceled this year as concerns about the spread of the coronavirus continue to dash hopes of holding large-scale events where social distancing is challenging, if not impossible. The marathon, which is the world's largest, would have celebrated its 50th anniversary in November. As The New York Times notes, it typically attracts more than 50,000 runners, 10,000 volunteers and roughly a million fans.
